Weren't the later AKM models all made without wood furniture? That would make Phrost's pretty avant-garde in terms of the AK's evolution.

It is. To me, a 6-position stock is more practical than a folding one. I'm not going to be climbing in and out of vehicles with the gun, and can't ever see myself firing it without lifting the stock to my shoulder.
So if it doesn't fit the AK "theme" *shrug*.
