Lowering the head is a no-no in MT, you're setting yourself up for a knee to the face. Maybe that's why you don't see many long distance bodyshots in MT.
You have to learn to cover yourself with the left arm when throwing the cross. This is one of the most difficult things in striking sports, since everybody tends to "open up" when commiting to a right (or left if you're in southpaw stance) power punch.
Practice, practice and practice. -

What JC said.
Also have you considered a combo?Such as hitting him hard that puts him of kilter so you can go in to do a body shot.[img=http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/2364/8026700123940loij9.th.jpg]

Well, leading with a leading cross to the body didn't seem to do him any good.
I can't just answer with "learn to fight"There's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you. I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain. I will use my mistakes against you. There's no other choice. -

Straight punches to the body are not a good technique, excepting maybe for a straight jab preceded by a feint/actual jab to the face. Any time I've ever been really whalloped with a body shot was a hook. Particularly lead hooks.
The advice I've seen says that if you can hit a guy with a right hook, there's probably a better punch you can throw at him. -
