It's people like the original posted that make me shun the term "martial artist". I generally don't tell people I do martial arts, I tell them that I kickbox. The only problem with that is all the people that think kickboxing=cardio kickboxing. I'd say I do muay thai, but nobody's ever heard of it.

Hrmmm so I'd say generally that most systems would fall under the term of "martial arts" - like WC, BJJ, Tai Chi, WTF TKD, Muay Thai, etc etc, because everything, even wushu and TKD has potential fighting stuff in it and given the correct training methods, crosstraining, and live resistance training/sparring environments you could presumably fight with it.

Obviously people don't do that, people who do wushu don't do full contact events or do alot of pad work or other training that would lead you to develop fighting skills. So because people don't train it for fighting, or at least the majority of practitioners, does that make it not a martial art? Because of what people choose to do with a particular system, does it change the intrinsic fighting possibilities it has?

I suppose then I would change my definition of "martial art" to be "anything that you could train with live resistive drills and execute with similar conditions in a random environment and have sufficient success from a self defense/fighting perspective." Or something like that. So things like wushu and TKD could be used for fighting, they have fighting aspects to them, but the practitioners just choose not to practice it that way.

Conversely, 2+2=3 for sufficiently low values of 2.

It makes sense, but I've never seen it before.
