Vatican: Creationism is "a kind of paganism"

BELIEVING that God created the universe in six days is a form of superstitious paganism, the Vatican astronomer Guy Consolmagno claimed yesterday.

Brother Consolmagno, who works in a Vatican observatory in Arizona and as curator of the Vatican meteorite collection in Italy, said a "destructive myth" had developed in modern society that religion and science were competing ideologies.

He described creationism, whose supporters want it taught in schools alongside evolution, as a "kind of paganism" because it harked back to the days of "nature gods" who were responsible for natural events.

    1) I wonder what the fundies will think about this. Reflect on the error of their ways? Suicide bombing?

    2) HA-HA!
You can't make people smarter. You can expose them to information, but your responsibility stops there.

Most fundies think the Catholic Church is in league with Satan anyway...

This will just be icing on the cake.

Dude, even Protestants look down on Fundies.

I was raised Lutheran. In a discussion with a Fundie, who praised Martin Luther for stopping the evil Catholics, I reminded the Fundie that Lutheran theology shares mor e in common with Catholicism than with his theology, such as believing that Christ is truly present in the Eucharist.

It didn't take long for said Fundie to start condemning Lutherans as pawns of the Catholic Church.

It's not just the Catholic church that leans against this creationism ****. The Anglican and most Lutheran churches have the same position, and somewhere I read (can't remember where) it is same with the Easter Orthodox churches, most Islamic and Buddist scholars as well... someone told me the Amish as a whole do not swallow this creationist crap either (but don't know if that's true.)

I may be wrong, but this creationism crap is mostly concentrated here in North America. Why, oh my, why here???? The thing that ticks me the most is that even people that graduated from Universities believe in that crap. How could someone that attains a certain level of education still believes in it is beyond me. :bduh:

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

It's not believing in it that's the problem, it's actually believing it should be taught in a science classroom.

Obviously they didn't take Secrets of the Universe 4114 as one of their electives. How these people can believe in Creationism is simple; faith. It's a belief absent of (or in direction contradiction to) fact.

Meh, pple don't need to take special courses to understand evolution is the way life works. My grandma never studied beyond elementary, and yet she is quick to say "There are so many things we don't fully understand, yet what scientists say MUST be true."

I dunno. I have faith in the Catholic church, even when I dissagree with a lot of its dogmas. I have faith that all religious beliefs are righteous, though I believe my faith is closest to the truth (no disrespect to anyone.)

But that same faith always taught me that God gave Humans of all races, ages and faiths a highly evolved brain, to use and analyze the world that was given to us. God gave us the power to chose, to think, to analyze and make choices as well as the ability to understand (if we chose to) we have a responsibility to use our minds.

To go back to the pre-Darwin forms of though that would be an insult to God IMO. That would be akin to act like retards and missuse the one true element that SO FAR has given us a distinct advantage over other creatures and placed us at the top of the food chain, our brain power...

... not that we are really doing a good job at using it, but ****, Fundies are making stupidity a form of art :tard:
