    Hell yeah! Hell no!

What are the rules at your dojo/shop/place of training?

The rules at mine have changed for the worse today, and I think it might be going McDojo... What are the rules at yours?

Fine fine, they have now stated that you must pay to "rent" equipment in the shop during each class (previously all equipment was usable by students freely within the shop - thats what it was there for) and now they require all students agree in writing not to buy any equipment or gear anywhere other than the shop.

    McDojo!!!!!!

Now that that is settled, next question? Such as entreaties for suggestions as where to train in your area next?

That sounds like general revenue making BS. I'd confront your "master" about it and bring other students who agree with you. I'd also never sign that agreement.

uuhhh time to change schools. The fact that you had to ask means you know this.

A good school can have some McDojo practices, but that crosses the line into Bullshido.

One of the places I trained before had a mat fee, but that was to replace and clean the mats on a reasonable basis. What kind of "equipment" are we talking about? Are we talking about freeweights and such?

Well either way I've never heard of that kind of nonsense. How would they enforce said contract.

"Jim I need to speak with you about the jump rope you bought at toys-R-us yesterday. This clearly violates the exclusivity agreement you signed last wednesday. You, me and the lawyers are gonna have to have a talk."

Unfortunately, that practice is enforced in a few McDojos I know. You want to make $$$? Teach kids and sell them everything. The whole "junior-black-belt" crapolla arises from $$$--got to keep the little precious interested.

Of course the equipment is marked-up obscenely.

Now schools need $ to keep open. Teachers need to make a living. However, there is a point where making the $$ overtakes love of teaching.

Equipment embargoes are not necessarily bullshido.

But that's definitely a McDojo practice.
