Depends on the individual club. In Europe, there are some clubs that teach both savate/boxe Francaise and la canne, and some that only do one or the other ....

Modern canne fencing is more of a gymnastic sport than a self defense system but some of the old-school (1800s/early 1900s) canne fighting was the real deal (even if it looks a bit funny today).

Canne fighting had/has two seperate judgements, right? One for actual contact and the other for using proper technique.

As far as I know, he was a Kyokushin guy who simply put "Savate" on his card because he was paid to do so. Gerard Gordeau. And RS, he broke his hand in the second fight, and KOed the big guy in the first fight of UFC history.

A bit of Googling suggests that Dwight Woods, based out of Miami, is a certified savate instructor. Might be worth checking out - http://www.unifiedmartialart.com/

No mate he was World Boxe Francaise Heavyweight Champion, 1990-1992
It is checkable online. Though your probably right about him being labeled a savateur as opposed to a karate-ka/ muay thai type for publicity reasons.

i remember reading a thread about savate a year and a half, maybe 2 years ago. most of the posts were just making fun of the french and basically calling them pussies. i'm surprised not to see any anti-french sentiment here. instead people are actually looking for savate schools to train at! good to see imo.
