I realize the Phalanx isn't an anti-personnel weapon, but the point is the same, if the army was brought into the country, there's very little private citizens could do. The real protection from the army comes from the fact that all federalized troops must be deployed outside of the country, not that you can own guns.

There's actually also a differance between "arms" and "ordanance" ordanance being explosives.

Arms refers to small arms, rifles (even relatively large ones), pistols, shotguns etc.

The distinction has been around since the constitution was written.

Though civilians can get their hands on ordanance legally, it's not really constitutionally protected the way small arms are.
So, why then, so you specify small arms?

to be a bitch I will do this

    Surely you must be joking.

    One button

Then again maybe you could finish off the b52 with your 'small arms' fire before it wastes your state

"Small Arms" is a military term for man-portable weapons as opposed to those that need to be vehicle mounted.

    ludicrous diversions.

our right of 'free speech' is protected, but, as they say, you cannot scream 'fire' in a crowded theatre.

    "Reasonable limits"

The answer to 'why can't I own a GE minigun/flamethrower/plasma rifle/rail gun, etc etc?!" is the same.

I'd wager that a large majority of the military and police would defect, most military/LEO people tend to be gun owners in civilian life, firearms related message boards sometimes seem like every other person is a cop or former/current military.

a few million armed citizens is more then enough to deal with fancy weapons. No one is going tobe dumb enough to stand and engage a tank or helicopter with a rifle, but people cant live in tanks and helicopters forever.

Actually there are people that own miniguns, and flamethrowers, in fact, flamethrowers arent even regulated.

People very often underestimate the type of weaponry that civilians can and do have or can manufacturer fairly easily.

Caesar proved that moving an army into a republic and assuming control is more than possible.
