The Mini-14 has been consistently maligned for both it's inaccuracy AND unreliability. That's just hearsay, but I hear it a lot it seems.

You can probably get an SKS or an M1A in CA. Kind of a large price gap, but they aren't all "scary" looking, and that's what counts in CA.

I'll take your word about the mini 14. I've seen SKS's recently, but they're heavily modified to conform to the laws here (the most striking modification is the non-detachable magazine). I'm not too sure about those.

Basically all I want out of a rifle is accuracy out to about 300 yards (finding a place to shoot can be a pain in the ass here so I doubt I'd be able to practice enough to hit anything farther out than that) and reliability if the commies (or ATF) invades and I have to head for the hills and spend a few months fighting in a mud pit. Not that I think this will ever happen, but I don't buy car insurance hoping that I'll get in an accident.

I'd go with a good old Remington 700 .308 if I were you, and get some good glass for it.

Why a bolt action? And I'm a pistol shooter, and not a very active one at that, I assume by "good glass" you mean a scope?

Non-detachable magazines are actually the standard on the SKS. The ones capable of using a detachable AK mag are mostly modified versions. I'm sure some factories are turning them out that way now, but I remember modifying dad's Chinese SKS to take AK mags years ago.

Edited to add: actually, an AR-15 wouldn't be my first choice. They're not well known for ability to take punishment and resist dirt and corrosion, which I value in my firearms. I was thinking along the lines of a mini 14 (but I'm not sure if they've been banned here as well).

You can get some CA legal M4's or build your own AR to comply with the rules.

God made all men, but Colonel Colt made them equal.

I just like guns, I have always liked gun. Not to be a good-ol-boy stereotype but I shot my first gun off my granddaddy’s knee at age six. At family functions, like Thanksgiving and Christmas, the members of my family would shoot guns or hunt until the turkey is ready. On a few occasions the members of my family had to hit the head of a tack at 100 yards with a rifle before they could sit down to eat. For you non-gun people, that is possible if you have a high end, bull-barrel, target rifle.

It is simply part of my culture.

While this is a Martial Arts website, I think that I can say that a gun is the best self-defense…period. A man or woman in an F’n wheel chair can defend themselves against the biggest strongest attacker is they have a gun and know how to use it.

Therefore, guns are an incredibly leveling invention. The peasant can defeat the knight, the week and defend themselves against the strong, why do you think the southern states banned African-Americans from owning guns after the end of Reconstruction? The reason is simple. If the Freedmen were armed, The Klan could not have terrorized them into submission. An armed civilian population is one sign of a free people.
