Okay, it's the 4th of July 1979. I was with my brother in law, Dan at one of his friend's house. His friend was one of the types of people kind of like Binary from a few posts above, except Dan's friend was really rich and had a huge collection of weapons.

Well, we were goofing around shooting off fireworks out in front of the house. Eventually, Dan's friend disappearred into his house. When he came out, he asked Dan and I if there was anyone on the other side of the hedge which separated his house from his neighbors. I was closer, so I look over and say "no."

At that point, Dan's friend says "Get down." Dan and I were a little perplexed until we saw him raise up a genuine MAC-10 complete with suppressor (it was chambered for .45 acp). When we heard him pull the bolt back, we knew immediately what he meant, and both of us flopped immediately into the dirt.

Before either Dan or I could look up and start screaming at him, we hear:

"Hold on! I've got another two clips!"

    (pause)

Dan's friend had clipped the hedges using the weapon.

Now, THAT is being unsafe with a firearm.

Okay, you can harp all you want about Kat's and Ashley's photo shoot sending the wrong message. I'll leave you alone about it from now on.

And all this time I thought it was because of all those people who put their finger on the trigger when they don't mean business. Who knew?

The funny part of my story was that guy also emphasised keeping your finger out of the guard. (Damn, trying to remember his name is going to drive me nuts the rest of the day).

Actually, now that I think about it, all the gun nuts who I've encountered that I considered unsafe in the handling of their weapons were the end-of-the-world types like Binary from a few posts ago and Dan's friend. The LARPers like Kat and Ashley always seemed to me to be rather safe regarding the handling of weapons.

I was in the Navy, and every 6 months we qualifed with pistols (pretty much as long as you didn't shoot the deck you qualified). I did particularly poorly one qualification and decided I needed to hit the range more often. The navy really didn't care if I could hit anything and wouldn't provide weapons, ammo or range time, so I decided to buy my own pistol. I looked at a few models and settled on a Ruger KP-95 (9mm). I'm thinking of getting a rifle and maybe a shotgun sometime, but haven't decided exactly what I want.

I'd love to, but I live in CA.

Edited to add: actually, an AR-15 wouldn't be my first choice. They're not well known for ability to take punishment and resist dirt and corrosion, which I value in my firearms. I was thinking along the lines of a mini 14 (but I'm not sure if they've been banned here as well).
