Why do you need all of that momentum and force in a block, though? That seems like wasted energy. Shouldn't you just deflect the incoming punch or check a kick, and then attack on your own?

Sci-MDK, this brings me to my next point. I love learning sword arts, Western and Oriental. I highly doubt that these arts will ever be used in combat, so I don't care if I don't have a lot of alive training in those areas. In fact, I think alive training for kenjutsu is scary, because nothing but a real sword simulates the way a real sword acts. :) You can "spar" with shinai, and if your balls are really big, bokken, but it's not the same. Shinai and bokken don't move like a real sword moves. So I'm fine with training kenjutsu in kumitachi and kata form.
But when you're talking about hand to hand fighting, or fighting with weapons that might see use in modern days (like knives), then you've got to spar, you've got to have full resistance, and it's got to be alive at some point, or else it just won't be there when you need it.--

you dont `need` that much force and momentum at all if you get the timing and the angle right. :new_smili -
