All this boomerang and stick talk has got me thinking. Why wouldn't the spear make the list? If you think about it the spear was one of the first thinks designed (if not the first) with the explicit purpose of being more effective at killing things. Flint knives were multi-purpose tools, as were stone axes. Even clubs could be considered multi-purpose, used as hammers to crack open nuts and fruits. Spears seem to be the granddaddy of all killing implements.

More to the point the spear may be the precursor to all projectile weapons. So if you want to look for revolutionary, if not new and exciting, then I think the spear is a good choice.

isn't a spear basically the same thing as a pike? I guess they could've just said "pole arms", but I guess that'd be too general.

I'd say the sword...all swords belong on the list for the simple reason that the sword is the first tool devised with the exclusive purpose of killing other humans. It really has no other purpose, it's not good for cutting wood, it's not good for hunting, the only thing it's really good for is killing people.

Pikes were definitely a refinement of spears, but I am picturing the very first flint dagger lashed to a stick by some early human to throw at other living things...now that is a revolution right there.

I'm fond of swords too. Speaking of which, are there any good ARMA locations in the Tucson area? I may be moving out that way in the not too distant future.

I dont think there's anything in Arizona that I'm aware of, might consider posting on the ARMA forum to see whats up, however.

Swords and spears, once again, fulfilled a role already occupied by something else, they just did it differently.

I guess you could throw flint tools up there as the first weapon, but it seems kind of like a cheap entry.
