the whole long bow piercing through plate mail concept is just a myth, or a romantic legend as it were. they have done tests to see if long bow bodkins of the Agincourt era could pierce French plate mail of the same era, and found that the arrows wouldn't do a damned thing to the armor.

the most probable reason that Henry V had so many longbowmen in ihs army was because they were cheap (his liege knights had to supply their own troops)

During the battle of agincourt (one of the main origins of the longbow myth) the French calvary, in their overzealousness, pratically trampled one another charging into a narrowing muddy field. The archers just waltzed in later and slit the throuats of French nobility who were stuck in the mud.

There are accounts written by Islamic writers during the crusades that said European knights (armored primarily in chain mail) were impervious to the Islamic arrows, but that once their horses were slain they surrendered readily.

The katana mythos is another thing that irritates me. They were not necessarily any more effective than European swords. They were just designed for different purposes. Katana's were great at cutting down unarmored peasants (compare them to European calvary sabers) but they would have done nothing against a well armored knight. I'd rather have a Eurpean small sword. With a few pounds of pressure they could skewer an unarmored foe...plus you get to look like a fop while using one.

Shut up, fag. The point of archers wasn't to kill heavily armored knights, it was to kill the poorly armored peasant levies and rout the rest, making the knights ineffective.

Same reason the airplane is on the list, over the tank; a complete revision of warfare.

Actually the tank broke the stalemate of trench warefare in WW1.

Not only that, but they assured themselves a good supply of archers by banning the practice of all other sports on Sunday.

I'm surprised the Hyrogen Bomb didn't make the list.

No it didn't. The arrival of the Americans is what broke the stalemate.

Yup! The Great War was a trench war, and a tank can't do a lot against a trench. They were, however, fucking pivotal in the early stages of WWII.

yes, but there are a great number of armchair historians and sca asswipes who will tell you that longbows were the tank killers of the 14th and 15th centuries, which they were decidedly not.

archers kicks ass, but armor busters they are not.

Weren't early tanks used mostly just to run over barbwire and the like?
