they're learning more than one range of fighting and doing it full contact. it doesn't matter whether its JKD or anything else. to me that is a description of a "good" MA. (as long as the techniques they're using are good ones, and are being done correctly, i.e. full contact sparring isnt full contact capoeria dance offs, and they're not crappling)
