    Judo Chop?

I always thought their was no such thing as a Judo Chop, until the other night at Judo when the black belts were talking about striking and they mention 'judo chop'. When I asked about it they said it was a strike to the trekia(sp?). They said it would drop some one hard.

Any one have more info on the Judo Chop? Or being hit in the trekia?

    Judo Chop
People often tell me that I fail to see the gravity of the situation.
I see the gravity, and I say...

Step right up folks and watch me defy gravity!

Atemi-waza = Judo striking. I have never known anybody to train in atemi-waza. It is pretty much dead and gone.

well, lots of places train just enough striking to do self defense techniques and call that "atemi-waza" - is there some more traditional atemi-waza you're refering too?

    Also:

    Trachia.

Not really. When the bb's were talking about the Judo Chop it was more for just talk about striking in Judo. I have no idea if it is traditional, thow I would like to know...

yes, it works. even a moderate poke in the trachia isn't a happy feeling. A full on strike will either close it (can't breathe, pass out/die) or rupture it (air goes into the interstitial spaces, rather than the lungs, can't breather, pass out/die). It's a pretty easy target, and doesn't need much technical ability.

Can't comment on judo teaching this, but I can imagine most instructors of any MA suggesting it as a self defence type strategy.

Pretty weird to have a chop (ie fred flinstone) hitting you in the neck. Feels really unnatural and weak to do it just sitting here.
You can't make people smarter. You can expose them to information, but your responsibility stops there.

As in an axe-hand to the side of the neck? Very common in traditional Jujitsu styles and combatives. Rodney King also demontrates it in his "Crazy Monkey" boxing DVD. Leads me to believe it's an effective strike.
