The duckunder with gobehind is the best knife defence.

    That and running like ****.
    What am I?:

I am ignorant, thieving, lying, hypocrital, violent and thoroughly self obssessed. I steal from others to make myself look better, only to make the item or information worse.

I go on and on and ON about how brave and strong and brilliant and wealthy I am, but in the end I'm all mouth and no trousers.

That's right children, I'm your average AMERICUNT! and I exemplify AMERICA!:911flag:

Yes, through persistent lack of work and the cultivation of ignorance, he is a true American.

The question is: why? Why train to run around in a small area? If you can run, fine. But this is in a confined space, with an almost-determined attacker. Surely it's better to learn how to confront the knife, and be tested on this, than to learn how to run around? If the test was on avoidance techniques, it doesn't look much like them either.

    Baffled.
Thanks. I thought it was just me. We will have to wait and see if the same excuse is added to the sparring 2-1 video.

There are styles like Pekiti Tirsia which will chamber the weapon back so that they can generate power and not expose the weapon hand as a target as much. Instead of relying on the weapon as the first line of defense, they use footwork.
So in principle having the weapon in the rear hand is not necessarily a bad strategy, just different. Just to be clear, I'm not defending that guy on the clip because he wasn't a good example of what I'm talking about.

We use standard lead in pekiti tirsia. You'll see crossloading primarily so that we can nail out the power strikes continually, and the lead hand forward is assuming you're already in trapping/clinch range.......which is what we train first.

    Tantojutsu

Japanese tantojutsu uses the knife in the rear right hand. Of course, it was not a dueling style of knife fighting and assumed you lost your sword and had to run your blade under/through some armor.

I have been shown some shanking/shiving methods that have the knife in the rear hand. Not very pretty, but very effective.

However, the attacker was being pretty passive. Probably because he knew it was a "drill" of some type.

It upsets me when schools do stuff in tests that the student has had zero training for. What is the point?

My 3rd dan TKD test was like that, find improvised weapons. Problem for my teachers was that I had been training in another dojo while at school. I actually had learned some things in the past year and showed them what ugly things yawara and tanbo can be using a short pipe casing I found. Although the test was "hard" (physically exhausting), I am not sure what it really tested. *shrug*

It was a heck of a lot better than that poop, though.

I was a first black with all the "material" needed to test for 2nd. Burnout, then disillusionment set in (especially after hearing the baby melting thing), and I left.

I didn't think it was that bad either. Definately better than the typical everybody attacks one at a time and magically freezes in time while you let off your 100 hit combo vis-a-vis your typical EPAK school.
