Ohhh looks bad. You'd be better off if it were wooden or aluminum.

In regards to the blade being dull. I am not sure if I explained it well the first time or not, but it has nothing to do with the blade being dull, and it might be a semantics argument, but there was never an edge put on the blade. I don't know how else to explain it. Except to say that the actual "edge" is rounded.
I will try and draw what the edge looks like from a head on perspective.

I have a Lawyer right now; she is a friend of the Family. I am trying to be as pro active on this as possible, and trying to get as much information, and help from every angle that this point.

The other question I am really interested in is if anyone knows anything about the law in Japan where it is illegal to owning a sword or edged weapon... is this fantasy or is there some truth to it?

He probably thought you were a ninja. They should have a death penalty for ninjas.

Doesn't matter it isn't semantics, you had a weapon in your car.
Seriously, if it looks anything like the picture the Cop had cause to charge you. I'm sorry if that upsets you but, edge or not, it looks like a weapon.

You have to remeber what expired tags and no license, all offenses, mean in certain areas, illegal activities.

(as told half jokingly to my wife, who carries quite a few kitchen knives with her most of the time).

Regardless, whatever you may find out regarding Japan's laws in this situation, it is entirely irrelevant to your situation.

    Good luck with your dilemma.

At Added Badness that your Tanto is a Hidden Tanto. The fact the saya is make to look like wood only adds to the CCW charge.

However, if you got a good lawyer you should easily plea bargain this down to a fine and some community service.

I think you screwed yourself by saying yes when he asked if you minded him searching your car. That told him you had something to hide. AS a juror I would feel that you were trying to hide that blade if I was asked.

However, I drive to work in michigan with a machette in my truck all the time. I never took it out after I moved. I better get on that before I get screwed.

One last thing. ALWAYS carry anything that might be a weapon locked in your trunk. At least that way you can tell the officer you are transporting it from one location to another. You wouldn't transport handguns under your seat would you?

Any time any one with a badge asks to search anything of yours, politely ask for a warrant and to have your lawyer present before they do.

Sorry, the police do not need your consent or a warrant to search your car.

    No, they don't.

But if they ask, and you say, "Sure, officer, go right ahead," it gives your lawyer a whole lot less to work with in court.
