If your art contains kata, then it is necessary to know the kata as it is a moving syllabus.

It is more important to have knowledge of and train in using the syllabus than just knowing it.

Oh, but thatīs another thing. I thought you were saying that doing kata develops bad habits or somehting like that.

I think we once had a similar debate about if it was appropiate to do callistenics (sp?) and such at MA class, as part of the conditioning training.

People should not focus so much in kata as it is usually done in McDojos and MA's which have them.

Kata should be practiced more at home so it doesn't take up alot of class time.

I'm thinking everyone that's been doing kata just doesn't want to accept the fact that they've been wasting countless hours practicing something that won't actually benefit them in any way

Still has to be learned at class, learning it is what takes up a ton of time.

It's an unnecessary pain in the ass if your goal is primarily to be a good fighter rather then pursuing an art for the sake of art. I can certainly understand people pursuing an art for the sake of tradition rather then utility, thats why i study and practice sword work.

My heart is divided on this one.

On one hand, it is true that a class based solely on technique oriented stuff (drills, heavy bag, pads, sparring, shdowboxing, and such) would probably be more productive, skill-wise.

On the other hand, the conditioning part of the class forces me to do all those exercises either I donīt like or I donīt have the time to do, like bodyweight exercises, ab work, jump rope and *gasp* running.

Well, it got me a nice throphy at a kata competition.

Of course we all got throphies so our little mcdojo feelings wouldnīt get hurt, but still...

Yeh, i agree that it's helpful for people that don't have the drive to do that kind of work on their own.

Personally i prefer to get my cardio primarily through sparring.

It occurs to me that kata might have something to do with a bad student to teacher ratio. . .
There's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you. I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain. I will use my mistakes against you. There's no other choice.
