As for the qualifications of my instructor in terms of grappling, I haven't asked simply because I'm rarely there. And I've watched the way they promote students as well. Let's put it like this: if I had a black belt, then I'd be worried. I'm going on my 4th year, and I'm just now training for greenstripe. That's pretty slow, mainly because I had to take time off for a non-related injury, but most of us that came in at the same time are various degrees of green and brown. I've seen schools guarantee a black belt in 18 months, and I just shake my head. They can't be learning ****, I don't care who's teaching them.

I'll ask around for schools in the USC area. The martial arts market in California is HUGE, with a lot of high priced chains with inexperienced instructors heading them...but there are also many quality schools.

To make my search easier, are you intent on staying with Shaolin Kempo...or are you willing to explore other styles? What about other forms of Ke?po like American/EPAK/Kajukenbo/etc...?

Your pictures paint you as athletic-looking, and you definately seem pretty aggressive...would you be averse to training Muay Thai or Boxing? You could probably get into a boxing gym for very little money.

Regardless, I'll see what I can find. Clyde, Omega, and Poidog would also be great sources to ask as well.

The fact that your instructor tells the class to "enroll in a grappling class" for complete training is pretty commendable. If he encourages cross training, then he can't be all that bad. You end up in trouble when someone starts claiming to have all the answers...yet refuses outside information.

As for UpaLumpa...he's kind of like the attention starved latchkey kid we all know.

He seems to have a strange fixation on me...which I find kind of flattering. Even though I've explained the methods of training that Kara Ho uses (resistance training, hard sparring, etc...), pointed out that one of my instructors is a boxer and another is a cage fighter, and explained that I also currently train in Machado BJJ...he still enjoys pasting pictures of Grandmaster Kuoha.

BJJ is obviously ripe for jokes about homosexuality and some of the covers of magazines your instructor has been on are inherently funny. Sadly, while I can recognize the first you don't appear to recognize the second. Though we can probably agree that neither are that funny.
