I just looked it up, a muzzle velocity of 650mps (compare with about 1000mps for a 5.56 fired out of a rifle) is just ominicky. The folks at FN have tried to make a round that is applicable to both pistols and assault weapons and have compromised both. It may penetrate body armor, but what kind of wound will it create when it hits soft tissue? The tumbler effect is wildly unpredictable. I soldier I know (my little sis, go figure) has shot people with a simmiliar round at a higher velocity and seen it do 1. nothing, requiring her to shoot the SOB again, and 2. remove limbs with a single round. With the decreased muzzle velocity, you'll see a lot less of #2. Compromise sucks, stick with the .45 and .308, or the 6.8 if you're so inlclined.

You might be right. Still, advertised muzzle velocity for the ss190 round is 2,130 fps from the Five Seven - well into the range where hydrostatic shock is a strong factor. The real issue is the round is pretty much unproven. It's meant as an SMG round, nothing more.

LOL. They never were (w/o permit). ****, toy guns which *look* real are not legal in NYC.

Rifle rounds for home defense? Anybody besides me live in suburbia and wanna take responsibility for your projectiles?

Even a .45 will go through 7 pine boards.

That is Just it Kein Haar. If you need to defend you home handgun=good shotgun=good SMG/sport carbine=not so good Rifle=bad.

the fn 57 is somewhere in that middle area. If it were my only choice, and i had to shoot someone in a house full of people I would change my tactics and fire a few shots as possible.

Well, if you happen to have a guy shooting into your house with an AK-47, my preference would go with a rifle to return fire. Other than that circumstance, rifle no good for home defense.

I was voted most likely to return fire in high school..... But the above situation is pretty rare unless you live in Compton CA.

For home defense I'm assuming the ideal would be a round with low penetration and decenct stopping power, am I correct?

I think this might be the way to go then:
