I think JFK's speeches would have been far more effective with a more neutral accent.

Regional accents/dialects/languages in the US are dying. When my dad was growing up in SW Louisiana, everybody spoke French. Now, very few people do. There used to be tremendous linguistic diversity in the US, sadly that's fading away.

Pretty soon, we'll all sound like Dan Rather. Now there's a thought.

in aus the further you go from the city the thicker the accent gets. there are places where a lot of people from the city have a hard time understanding what anyone is saying. there are also words which are used in some states but not in others. for example, before i moved to where i am now i'd never heard "have a chop" - which means have a go. there are also differences in sport taste from area to area.

If you look carefully at Ordinance Survey maps, you'll find they're actually regions in the Midlands. Coventry in particularly regularly sees titanic battles between the forces of good and evil, usually on a Saturday night.
