I've made a LOT of bad calls, all with newbies at my gym. I guess I just keep hoping that a new student at our gym will be some badass thaiboxer to raise the overall quality of strikers there.

No, I sure can't. In fact, I don't really think about it much. Nor do I care to.

Yes, but only if they're into MMA.

I already posted about how found my bjj/judo/MT gym - I saw a dude maybe 5'5", ripped, blonde spiky hair, tribal tats, and a soul patch goatee thing. So walked up and asked him if he did MA and sure enough he did.
You can't make people smarter. You can expose them to information, but your responsibility stops there.

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

You ever check to see if your results were accurate? I think if you did, the number would quickly drop to a 7 or 8.

I grew up in the military, went to a military college, and have done some type of MA most of my life. Most people when they meet me assume that I am a cop. I think that certain people have a certain bearing, but that doesn't mean they really know anything.

Look at Patrick Stewart (Jean Luc Picard / Professor Xavier). He has bearing, but I don't think that skinny little **** could punch his way out of a wet paper bag.

My second ex-wife and I lived in a very small town. Most of the people there where backwards ass country fucks who had poor posture and didn't pick up their feet when they walk. She asked my once "Why do you always walk around like you are about to kick some ones ass?" I don't think I really did, I just think these people were not used to people who have a confident bearing.

You may ask yourself, why the hell would Rhamma live in this backward little town with a white trash wife? I will tell you she looked like the guy on the cover of "Mad" magazine. She had turned up nose, curly red hair, and a gap in her teeth.

Reason - She had a really nice ass and she screwed like a rabbit! Live and learn!

Now I have a wife who is nice, and smart, and still... well, you get the idea, best of all worlds!
People often tell me that I fail to see the gravity of the situation.
I see the gravity, and I say...

Step right up folks and watch me defy gravity!

Meh, people can have a "vibe" and still know ****.

I got some street smarts, I've punched and been punched, but other than haymakers, I can't punch for **** like a trained striker would do. I've done the kata crap, but I've never trained in boxing or in any striking arts that are worth mentioning. Yet, one time at the gym I go, this old man asked me if I was a boxer, cuz I "looked" like a boxer.

I was kinda flattered, but at the same time I'm like "what the heck". ****, I'm a short hard-gainer midget to begin with. After some talk, he told me he though I was a boxer or something like that because I walked up straight and kept opening and closing my fists, and I'm always looking around me. For the later, I like to keep an eye on who's coming in and out around me... old, old, old habit.

As for the rest, I constantly try to correct my posture since I have a few back problems (I sit on my ass 8+ hours a day on a PC), and I need to move my fingers and force a fist (specially during workouts) cuz I find that it helps me deal with my never-ending cases of tendonitis and carpal tunnel (that's what 8+ hours a day of typing does to your hands :P )

Anyways, the old gent thought I was a boxer for all the wrong reasons. It's was flattering, but man, he was way, way way, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay wrong on that one.

    Hands, ears, nose.

First things I look at. If any of those things look fucked up there is a good chance we have a fighter.

But if you see a guy with a crooked nose, scars over both eyebrows and on his cheek it's safe to say you don't wanna punch with him. He's a boxer. Huge ass ears? Grappler. Messed up knuckles and hands? Probably an old karate type guy but you might be looking at a construction worker - take a gander at other features.

I try my best to 'blend' in. Button up shirt. Glasses sometimes. Tattoos are all covered. Nobody knows anything. The only things that give me away? Ears, nose, hands and facial scars. But unless you are looking you probably wouldn't notice any of it. I put on a smile and lull you into a false sense of security.

    The funny ones?

The guys wearing the MMA, UFC, Tapout shirts with all thier tats showing. Semi-flexed lats and traps. Slightly cocked head with a grimace like, WTFULOOKINAT? Check out thier car and it has at least 1 tapout sticker on it. Yeah buddy - keep trying. Maybe if you project this intimidating presence nobody will mess with you. And you will never have to come to grips with the fact that you are insecure.
