Generally when people say condition in karate they mean body conditioning, as in condtioning your body to take hits, by hitting you and conditioning your body to hit pepole, by hitting things, makiwara, heavy bags etc.

Well, you're either a Shotokan, or a Shotokan't.

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

Many people in the organization I belong to started out in Shotokan. They are usually pretty good. I think the type a training they got was mostly Kihon training. But they didn't have any one to help them learn to "connect the dot" with regard to bunki.
No, I am not saying Shotokan sucks or anything of the sort. Or that they "graduated" to the system I'm in.
You have to learn to "work-out" and ingrain these into natural movement. It helps if you have some one to show you the "higher level stuff". And not have to figure it out on your own.
People often tell me that I fail to see the gravity of the situation.
I see the gravity, and I say...
Step right up folks and watch me defy gravity!
