Gary has never been able to find any death records for him. There was no a funeral and Gary had not seen him for months prior to being told he had died. It is possible he was out of state or overseas when he died. It is also possible that Yachigusa Sensei lied to Gary.

There should be school records of Jiro, but the San Francisco school district keeps those confidential.

Well, Gary, what high school did Jiro attend when you knew him in San Francisco? Maybe we can find a picture in a yearbook or something. Just trying to help out here...
