Right...an adult shodan rank. I dont know how most other TMA schools do it but a kids blackbelt is not a shodan rank. it is not even a dan rank. It is a piece of cloth. the kids feel good about it and most go on to keep training and get thier adult black belt.

I don't know how it is in the states ut here a kid can't get a black belt in judo (or in most MA) he needs to be at least 16 (18 in some arts).

In the United States there is no legal rule about rank--anyone can declare what they want. The only legal recourse--lawyers HERE might be able to enlighten--is if you try that with a trademarked group. So, I could be sued for using "Gracie BJJ" by the Gracies, but if I create "X-Ryu JJ Do" there is nothing anyone can do but kick my ass should the opportunity arise.
As for kids . . . I am sorry, no matter HOW clear someone makes it, the kid thinks it is the same as an adult rank . . . he is just not old enough.
Blame the kids? Only for their inability to pull up their pants. Just as there are "Little League" parents who live throught their tykes, there are martial arts parents who have idiotic expectations. I cannot really fault an eight year-old . . . but I can fault the adults who should know better.

BJJ might make you a better ground fighter, but Judo will make you a better dancer.
