In my pee-wee class, they have to EARN thier white belts. Once they earn them, they graduate to the regular program. Part of the requirement to graduate from white to yellow- no matter what age the student is, is to tie thier belt. This is not to test thier knot-tying ability, but it puts responsibility into thier hands and takes it out of thier parents. When a kid forgets thier belt (or pants, or jacket, or whatever), I hold them to the same standard of responsibility that I do adults. I have loaner belts, and they cost 50 to 200 push ups to rent- depending on color.

Why man, why?

Because I'm sick of trying to teach the parents how to tie belt for their 4-6 year olds. I'm mostly a MMA gym these days and really am tired of obsessing on whether the kids can tie a belt correctly when I came up through a system that didn't use belts in the first place....

Why worry if they are tied a certain way? Just let them tie them however they manage to keep the belt around their waist.

That's true, the idea is to keep the gi on. Finally i just figured that out not to long ago, i used to be a pit anal about the thing being tied on a certain way.

Because reality is perception to new students and if we had ass looking students (dress wise) the school would look like crap. Besides that how some Mcdojo's are and their students are crap most of the time. There still should be some pride in appearance.
