My biggest problem with the Therien organization is the deceptive practice of advertise themselves as “Jiu-Jitsu” and not “Jujutsu”. The “Jiu” spelling (or miss-spelling) is rather unique to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and its derivatives and is deceptive marketing on their part.

That's funny, I dug around Fredericton when I usto live in New Brunswick (about an hour and a half away from the city) and I never found any grappling-oriented schools. Where do you train, Shanehalfyard?

While I was there I visited the Fredericton amateur boxing club and the Maritime Martial Arts Academy for their kickboxing, both nice schools. I wasn't a fan of the other martial arts in the latter gym but the kickboxing instruction seemed solid enough. My old kung fu school has a kwoon up there, and I have heard there's a few others.

But really, to me the maritimes seemed to be pretty much a non-bullshido martial art wasteland. There were a few nice gyms but nothing decent where I usto live.

I'd also like to add that I'm not aware of ANY mixed martial arts tournaments in St. John or Fredericton, if you could point me in the right direction cleven I'd really love to believe that the area has something decent.

As John Therien started teaching jiu jitsu in 1968, how is it deceptive? Or do you think that after 25 years of teaching jiu jitsu, he and everyone else that have been around a long time should have to change the spelling because the Graciies are using the spelling? The" jiu" spelling is hardly unique to Brazillian jiu jitsu, and can be found in many older martial arts books.

The MMA event where it says his instructor/student loss is true, but what is not known is that the other fighter who won was also his student at the time, they both made it to the final and have both competed in national martial arts competitions previously.

Cleven, could you please provide the names of the fighters and the event in which they fought? If you could give the names of the other national MA comps they competed in, that'd be great!

Wow this is turning into a slam on Therien , he is a whole different beast than Britt Nickerson. I have only a cursory knowledge of Britt but I have seen him fight. Very limited ground skills but that is not what I wish to speak to. Britt did hold the Eastern Canadian Grappling championships last year and is hosting them again this Saturday in Saint John. I'm the first to slam McDOJO's but I give credit to this guy for trying to spread grappling in a province with little experience with respect to skilled instructors. Not that there is not some guys who know the game it's just that Sometimes you have to take what you can. I know this is not the forum to be a softy but sometimes it's cool to give a guy a break .
Let's move on to another victim ....how about guys like Therien who promote Blackbelts in any style the choose with World Kobudo. I mean let's get to the source of this crap.

Britt Nickerson competed in a jiu jitsu tournament that I was at. The tournament was double elimination and Britt was submitted in both matches in less than 60 seconds by blue belts.


People at the tournament were dumbfounded because Britt was wearing a black belt. They assumed it was a bjj black belt. He is a traditional jiu jitsu guy but tries to claim his school is bjj.


I know guys who used to train at his club until they realized he was a fraud.

It means nothing. It's a romanization many JJJ and pre-BJJ groups used before the BJJ explosion and still use.
