Does Aikido descend from a combat art? Sure.

Does that make Aikido a combat art? Hell no.

Aikido can be a fun exercise in improving your balance, breakfall methods and learning a few interesting features about anatomy. It might help with your overall conditioning.

Basically, Aikido makes a lot more sense once you accept that it is a form of yoga that has pretty much nothing to do with combat.

Now that I said that, is your Aikido more Daito Ryu (straight line) or is is cirucular like Aikido. Remeber Ueshiba introduced the circular movments to make Diato Ryu less destructuve (breaking people =/= peace and harmony).

Teh r3al Aikido should look like Japanese Jujutsu, with strikes, breaks, and sparring. BTW what Ryu of Japanese Jujutsu do you practice?

I guess it's more like Daito-Ryu , we practice mostly from real punches (jabs, straight punches, roundhouses and the like, not very much with the ol' shomen strike.

My Jujutsu is not exact Muso Shinden Kyoshyryu Jujustu, but a slight variation of it. What we do different is that we do it in a more realistic manner. Not using the classic movements of attack from the old schools of fighting arts in japan.

I do have to say that the dojo does not come streight from japan and neither does my ranking, whether it has actual ties with a dojo in Japan or not, i can't give two shits about. i just dig it and in my years it has kept me from being seriusly injured by some other fucker!

    Life is good sometimes!

I just thought of a T.V. series where an aikidoka travels the countryside getting his ass kicked while trying to use his art to do good.
Afterwards, he lies about the effectiveness of his art and how he took the other guys to the cleaners.
I call it "Aikido: The Legend Continues."

After reading the answers (not the question, this is actually a valid concern) in the Aikiweb forum I just have one thing to say: Someone needs to take these people out of their misery, they are just in too much pain.

    And about this:

I'm glad you took the time to specify "TOMIKI" aikido, although I must say (for the benefit of Tomiki aikido, which I don't know very well) that this sounds like the deep insight from a long 2 hrs experience in the art (including the video tape sessions).

By the way, this is what someone who spent a bit more than 30 min. practicing aikido thinks about this.
