A lot of it does indeed seem silly as a martial art, but there are also some very effective techniques taught in the curriculum. Speaking as someone who has taken ukemi from practitioners of rokudan level who are also ranked in other martial arts, I can say that I have felt highly effective technique. Hell, I have only been doing it for two years and I have been able to pull off a few different techniques on completely non-cooperative people outside the dojo who don't do aikido. Granted, they weren't street assaults but merely friendly comptetion among friends, but the point remains that we pretty much always try our hardest to completely own each other. Now if aikido were my first and only MA, I doubt I would be effective in it at all yet. This is just my take on aikido as a relative newbie to the art.

I have trained at quite a few different dojos before deciding on one to train at regularly, and one of the things I have learned is that it is hard to make blanket assumptions about any particular style of aikido because it varies from dojo to dojo even within the same style. The dojo I train at is aikikai and depending on what night it is and who is there, the practice is much different on any given night. We don't do any of the spiritual stuff/words of wisdom stuff at all. No ki BS at all (we don't even do the kokyudosa (SP?) exercises). There is a yokinshan dojo in my area as well, and the aikikai dojo I train at is much rougher from my experiences.

Jesus would do some sort of Wire-Fu **** like in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. If you are the Son of God, why not let the awesomeness show through?

In the words of Jesus in South Park:

J-"There is one thing you should know, my sons."
    Terrorists-"And what's that?"
    J-"I'm packing."
Jesus pulls out two pistols and goes to work.

Excuse me, he stabbed one of them in the head with a knife and shoot the other one. Jesus by Knife to the face.

Sorry, but I don't have cable.
A friend of mine told me about the episode and I decided to reprint it here.
    Makes you wonder though.
After getting killed by Jesus, it would be kind of tough to stand before he and his Father's throne awaiting judgement.
    J-"**** him up Dad!"

I know what you mean, but I wasn't talking about specific dojo(s), instead I was referring to the Aikikai Foundation generally. Maybe The Heart of Aikido by late doshu and president of the foundation might explain it better.

There are like 3 conversations going on in this thread. I know it's confusing.
