    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    crucifix

i've been using a the crucifix a bit lately, i think it's an interesting position.

    here is the general idea:

    http://www.dogsofwar.net/monte/html/crucifix.htm

here is how i get it:

sometimes they wll grab a single leg when going for a takedown and then i can get around to their side, but it's difficult to do.

for me it works best when they are turtled up and worried about me taking their back and getting my hooks in, which i rarely do now cos people are so good at defending it. so i hang off to the side and put one leg up near their head, which they usually go for if they haven't had the crucifix done to them before. they think they are going to take me down, but i reach over their back and grab their other arm. so now i have both of their arms and they have no way of defending their neck. i then reach around the neck with my free arm, then let go of their arm and then lock off the RNC. i don't have to roll over to get the choke like in the link above. if they have a gi i go for the collar:

it appears in that picture that he has got the crucifix from the back by hooking the chaps arm with his leg.

you can also do a neck crank from there but i've never tried.

can anyone add to this? i'd like to have more options from this position.

Working off of that picture in your post.

Leave your legs as is. Situp enough to tuck the opponent's right arm under your own right armpit. Keep the arm thumb up, slide your right forearm under the elbow and get it nice and perpendicular, you can just grab your own left lapel with your right hand or release his lapel with your left hand and creat a nice little figure four putting your left hand on his right shoulder. You should not have to lay all the way back down to get the arm bar of doom.

Failing that I'd drop the crucifix. Sink your hips back under him, keep the left arm trapped but put your hooks back in, he should now only have one hand to use in his defense against the RNC.

that armbar sounds really good, i'll try it as soon as i can. the second option is good too.

what i really like about this position is taking at least one of their arms away for the RNC. there was a long time where i wasn't getting any RNCs, then i started using the crucifix and it was so much easier.

I tend to roll which ever direction feels tightest; that is to say which ever direction innvolves the smallest roll and shortest transition into the position. Sometimes, if I've got a particularly high rear mount, that's just a sort of barrel roll. If I'm tight on him it may be more of a forward roll.

As with crime and politics, the situation is always fluid.

i've seen the other one you are talking about, but i'm having trouble finding a pic.

btw, apparently the gi choke from crucifix is called the "hell strangle" in budo.

You can also step over the head with the right leg and roll into a triangle and/or tight figure 4 if the arm slips out.
