I don't see anything wrong with side kicks. Probably one of the few useful kicks TKD actually has(Considering its not targeted at anything above the solar plexus).
San shou fighters use Side kicks with some success. Yes, its a little diffcult to hit the target with a side kick as opposed to a good 'lo round house but the pay off is there.
Of course if you spar with thick foam padding then its hard to feel the real power a side kick has. Trust me i've been winded by one.
I mean winded as in KTFO. -
