    Hey Crowey:
Is this like a meditative, tai-chi sort of form that you guys do?

If you know what you are doing and take it as a "I can do cool things" style, a sport and a workout then it looks alright. Some of the pics I've seen have some self-defence Japanese Jujitsu-esque locks and throws like which I guess could work if trained correctly. I didn't know you guys did that, is this stuff part of the TKD system or are these guys just pulling soem crappling out of thier ass?
This movement is found in the WTF form Koryo and one ITF form who's name escapes my memory.

Both ITF and WTF use forms that are basically rehashes of older Okinawan karate forms.

This motion is found at the beginning of the Okinawan kata Kongsangkoon. The WTF form Koryo is almost completely a Kongsangkoon rip-off, only shorter, and very gh3y.

As far as locks and the like, it all depends on the system of TKD. Some incorporate Hapkido self-defense style curriculums, which can either be good or crappling. One, that uses the Okinawan forms rather than the crap modern forms, uses traditional Okinawan grappling and bunkai. Another, in an effort to actually grapple effectively, continually develops its curriculum, and has high ranking members cross train in BJJ and judo.

    And Crowey, lighten up.

I thought Koryo was the BB pattern for both ITF and WTF. Although some ATA guy who recently joined our dojang said they do it in ATA as well.

It's called "heaven hands." It would be more of a meditative thing than a fighting technique, obviously. In addition to the WTF's Koryo, it's the opening posture of the ITF's Kwan-ge and Po-eun forms, and it shows up in Juche. It might show up more later, but I don't know.

And this is the standard Bullshido TKD explanation of this position.

It's not a meditation posture. There is no such thing as "meditation postures" in Okinawan kata, ergo, any meditation posture found in TKD hyung is bullshit.

As I said before, it comes from an Okinawan kata called Kongsangkoon. Funakoshi Japanized it when he brought it into Shotokan. He renamed the kata "Kanku", which means "Gazing into the Void", just for this main gesture.

Actually, this one is easy to answer. It's the command position at the start of a 1st-dan pattern. Well, they're not doing it the best that they could, but it's what they're going for.
