There was a guy fighting with a bullwhip and a knife at the last Dog Brothers gathering. I've seen bullwhips used in a few of those fights. It seems fairly easily defeated by covering up and rushing (then again, thi strategy will ruin you if they have a knife too).
I have a couple of sjamboks in different lengths. I like them, and carry one in my frame when I backpack. -

That was Cyborg Dog with the bullwhip, and he did have a knife for the close. He was fighting True Dog who is one definite badass, though. True was able to defeat the whip with his staff and precisely timed closes, but once he got in close Cyborg had tremendous advantage with the knife. Their two fights were great crowd pleasers and the sound of the whip cracking definitely added an aural cringe to the entertainment.

Whips.
I am pretty well schooled in this item - an interest in 'movement' - but hardly practical as a real world defensive weapon. The FMA uses a very short and fast snappy whip...not really a bull whip.....and even a 'pocket snake/flexible whip' will be extremly hard to explain to the local law enforcement guys.
Whip like movements are a part of my chosen martial method....and in full truth - my bull whip is made of fine cowhide - for kangaroo hide is very expensive, though considered the best for fine movements. I use it to learn more fluid movement.
IF you want to study the whip for a reason of learning movement...look up the few tapes by Anthony DeLongis.
A real master of this toy - who can even touch upon the FMA use of it.
Hardly a practical carry weapon though.
*****
I own a chain/flexible weapon made by Charles Gruzanski - "Spike and Chain" author.
Manrikikusari. And as efficient as it is - in the face of the law as a carry weapon?
Err...learn the principles and rip off a car antennae and use that in real time defense. Less legal hassle.
*****
Anytime you carry any weapon - and use it - but have NO legal permission - you might win a conflict - then the law might come for you. Check your local laws - they vary vastly.
DeLongis is one of the few that teaches a well constructed method of moving a snapping whip at super-sonic speeds. With an eye towards possible combative use.
*****
In closing - whips are about as useful, in the real world; as battle axes or pikes..war hammers or swords.
But hey...it is up to you to pick your poison.Last edited by RobG; 7/17/2007 3:55am at .

Nylon Whips are cheaper and low-maintainence

Here's a good site for Nylon Whips, 6'-12' lengths. Plus, with stock whips you can choke up on it or flip it & use it as a baston at short ranges, as long as the handle is pretty sturdy. Check 'em out. -

Here's a reasonable beginners kit from the same site:
