    Savate seems to have its origin as a collection of informal, uncodified streetfighting tricks, apparently emerging in the late 1700s and undergoing a very gradual process of codification for the best part of the next fifty years, before it was finally systematised and presented to the dominant (literate, middle-class) culture, by Michel Cassaux (1794-1869).

    It definitely does seem to have combined elements of sport and street self defense from the earliest times, with the street fighting aspects (la defense dans la rue) reaching their highest point of development in the late 1800s and early 1900s, while the sport aspect (la boxe Francaise) has continued to develop to the present day.

    Basically there are three competing theories about the origins of savate;

    1 - that it's a survival of ancient Mediterranean/European combatives (q.v. Pankration, zipota, purring (British/Welsh shin-kicking sport), etc.);

    2 - that it was influenced by Asian martial arts, presumably those encountered by French sailors travelling in the Far East;

    3 - that it was influenced by African and African-derived martial arts/combat sports witnessed by French travellers, either on the African mainland or in French-controlled outposts such as Martinique

    The truth is probably "all of the above", but AFAIK no-one knows for sure. Those few academically-oriented researchers who have taken an interest in the art still argue about its ultimate origins, and most of that discussion has been in French, meaning that even after three hundred years, comparatively little solid information about the origins of Savate is available to the English-speaking public.

    And BJJ is gay also. Ergo, Savate is the real thing. :snorting: Other more hetero oriented arts would well btw, to adopt the savate unitard. You have to be real tough guy (or gay), to use one. Havenīt seen many fat sokeīs wearing one. :idea1:

    Besides, women love it. :XXjester:

    **** ps ****

    Jokes aside, most likely a Savateur would kick my ass into pulp - I've seen a few Savate bout clips, and they certainly go at it and kick the **** out of each other...

    ... but, but, but... the bad hair and the unitards... God damn it, they are awful!!! But just like people make gay jokes about BJJ or grappling in general, why wouldn't be able to make gay jokes about Savate. Savateurs got it coming for wearing unitards...

    The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

    Muay Thai is a watered-down imitation of Savate. The only reason why the Thai use knees and elbows is that their close-range kicks & punches aren't as devestating as the French ones.

    True story, I promise.

    Don't be too hard on Savate. All martial arts are a bit absurd. We all have at one point or other worn strange costumes, pranced about in gyms or school halls and grunted like pigs when we tried to do a really bad roundhouse. MA training is full of pain, injuries and humiliation and most of us have bent our legs, arms and bodies in all sorts of weird angles, often on purpose. Some of us have even learned to count in Korean! And that's before you take into account the whole idea of a pastime (or profession) that features getting hit or thrown about a lot and you paying for the privilege.

    Of course those unitards look silly, but Muay Thai makes you do a funny dance, BJJ is mainly about rolling on the floor while cuddling another man and boxing is for the most part about being punched in the head for half an hour. Absurdity in the martial arts is widespread and thatís BEFORE the bullshido kicks in.

    Donít think for a moment that Iím slagging these arts off. They are all really effective martial arts and if you get to grips with them you will be formidable. They may save your life one day, or even help you win a UFC championship or two. But youíll still be odd.

    Excellent post
    Tough is not how you act, tough is how you train.

    Absolutely. Hereīs a little example from discussion while ago.

    Senior Instructor: "Hey, are you gonna fight in club competition? We need few more bouts."

    Rubberduck: "Donīt know. Do I have to wear that unitard?"

    SI: "Yes, sorry but that the etiquette."

    RD: "Crap."

    SI: "Yeah, I know it looks gay."

    Ps. elnyka. Me like your avatar. And liked previous more. :evil6:
