Martial arts without kicks and punches

Martial arts without kicks and punches

New Delhi: Thinking of martial arts brings to mind action, sweat and sometimes even blood. But Aikido is a peaceful form of martial arts.

Think of Steven Segal's fluid and fast motions in Under Seige. Think black belt in martial arts. And think Aikido.

No kicks, no punches and it's still a popular form of martial arts the world over.

Aikido is a Japanese form of defensive and non-agressive martial art, which uses the opponents strength to render them helpless.

So next time someone tries to gets agressive or picks up a fight, don't get nervous. Just stay calm and use Aikido to divert the attack.

The largest Aikido school is the Nippon Kan in the United States. The founder of the school, Gaku Homma Shihan, is a direct student of the founder of Aikido - Morehei Ueshiba. Homma Shihan or Sensei as he is popularly called.

Gaku Homma Shihan flew down to Delhi from Colorado with his nine disciples and taught people what they have to do when faced with a situation like a weapon attack or if grabbed from the back or the side and taken by surprise.

Aikido is not only for self defense, it is also a great way to a fitter body and a healthy mind.

It improves breathing, stretches the body and boosts circulation. Stressed souls might consider foregoing the gym and start learning Aikido instead.

It's 3:00 AM and you are on a dingy subway platform, alone.

    Two guys approach you.

    Just stay calm.

One says: "Yo, you got a cigarette?"

    Just stay calm.

This situation degenerates from there. First they wanted a cigarette. Now they want your watch. Your wallet. Your shoes.

    Just stay calm.

One of them shoves you up against the wall.

    Just stay calm.

He grabs your lapel and punches you in the face.

    Just stay calm.

    Yeah, right.

As far as I can recall, Steven Seagal uses plenty of gtoin kicks and ridgehands in his movies. And he also spazzes out and destroys people at the drop of a hat.
Steven Seagal apparently doesn't do proper aikido.

I'm looking into taking Aikido - the only MA in my area that I don't already have a blackbelt in (the other being TKD.) If it's cool - good. Great. If not, I will be the fastest, most accurate, sociopathic uke that school has ever seen.

That's good to go. But, if you find an Aikido dojo to train at, and they start telling you about how Aikido is a harmoneous exercise or anything like that, just walk away.

Be sure to throw a quick, un-telegraphed punch first without leaning, lunging or stomping.

Better yet a 1-2 combo. Nice and fast.

    What about fakes?
And what about the hand that they are not trying to "immobilize"?

Sure, just about anything will work.

Just don't grab their wrist, whatever you do.

    That was my entire point.
A martial art that relies entirely on an opponant throwing a single, overcommitted punch fails.
    It simply fails.
See: Lord Asia's infamous "Ghost Story" quote.
