I think that almost all of the current crop of elite grapplers could take out Kano, but that doesn't mean they belong on the trunk of the evolution tree.

Not a BJJ guy, but I have a great deal of admiration for: Minoru Mochizuki who's 8th dan in Judo was directly from Jigoro Kano.
I've rolled with a man who was a direct student of Mochizuki for about 7 years, and can attest to his ability on the mat. Very impressive. Oh yeah, and he knew what a triangle choke was long before any of us did, just called it Sangaku Jime.
Mochizuki, was thinking about cross-training for effectiveness even before WWII. -
