I was wondering if that was Hayward the Great. At 7:43, one of the Gracies calls him Hayward. My father made his shodan under Hayward, and one of my current coaches trained with him as well. I'll see if I can run the video by one or both of them to see if they can at least recognize the room.

    Edit:

It appears I jumped the gun. He is clearly identified as Hayward Nishioka towards the end. I'll still run it by the aforementioned people as they might know of it, or *gasp* know someone who was present.

It's a guard pass where you reach back to uncross the ankles, naturally, this makes you very susceptible to triangles.

Someone can probably link you to a megathread on it here or elsewhere, there is some manner of controversy and conspiracy theory regarding its efficacy. I don't really know as I've never train at or with anyone from a gracie school.

That crappy guard pass where you don't secure the legs, leaving one in and one out. Basically begging to get triangled.

Ummm, if that's Hayward Nishioka, Rickson is sparring with, I can see how he's getting manhandled.

    Getting mauled judo rules.
I was able to handle Judokas better than that from standing with 8 months of practice with wrestling takedowns. If they sprawl, they're on the ground anyway. Even if you have to stand back up, you can just try again, and by shooting for the legs you avoid most throws, keep yourself low and out of the range they want to fight in, within Judo rules.

But were you able to handle Judokas of Nishioka's caliber with 8 months of Puroresu? No offense, but I fucking doubt it.

No, but how many years of GJJ did Rickson have? You could even see, he was successful when he tried to use wrestling there, but most of the time he just didn't try. It's just silly. Like the way he buttscooted vs Funaki, that was GAY. There was no reason for him to have to do that, he was just being stupid.

Um, it didn't look to me like he was getting mauled. Took his back twice out of throw attempts, got tossed a couple times, and armbarred him.

    Or arrogant?

I've long noticed that the lack of tangiblel consequences for going to the ground makes a lot of BJJ guys lazy about even attempting takedowns.
