What is a good way to practice axe kicks with power?
I've tried hitting a heavy bag, but it doesn't quite seem right. Any ideas?

stretch. get a friend to hold a shield at a tilt somewhere around your chest height. at least thats all i can think of right now. though, hitting the heavy bag seems better for leg control, as your foot slides off if you miss by a bit.

When I was 7, I broke my first board in TKD with an axe kick. Not one of those goddamn re-breakable boards either, they hadn't invented those yet. It was an inch thick, foot square piece of pine. I hadn't done any bag training by that point. Just form work. I've never hit a heavy bag with an axe kick, just never attempted it.
Now, I collect whatever scrap wood I can find, and break it. Sometimes it's totally cheating because it's old or whatever, but I don't care. It's good practice.

Well ya ain't going to go round breaking fresh wood.
Get a partner to hold up a kicking paddle for you to aim at. Heavy bag will likely do more harm than good due to higher impact stress on your joints.

I would suggest buying a grappler friend a helmet and practice your axe kick against his takedowns to see if you can even do it in a real fight, which I doubt. Try it as a live drill first, then try it in sparring.

Axe kick against a takedown, that's quite un-realistic man. A takedown should be sudden and from a close-medium range, there isnt enough time for a person to lift up his leg for an axe kick.

Check out the thread icon - kickboxing. No takedowns in consideration.
The reason I asked is because my heel and the back of my heel bruise easily,
and I don't want to use a kick that would injure me if I can somehow strengthen/condition my foot towards using it.

When I practise my axe kick, I usually do it with my partner holding a pad at chest level, palms facing the sky. Try it, it's much better than a heavy bag. An axe kick should be for the shoulders/neck and head, no point using a heavy bag because a heavy bag is mainly for roundhouses frontkicks sidekicks etc..
