your wait is still not over coyote... as i am not a nutrider... but the original post saying "no strikes/kicks" is totally wrong... just watch videos of Osensei... and to give you something to pick on... aikido doesn't rely on 'single overcommited attacks' although many schools do practice it that way... and as to the other hand that is not being 'immobilized', much like in boxing body positioning, and 'angles' should be used to make it diffucult for the attacker to get a good attack with that hand...

i sparred a aikido kid from my school, he tryed to grab one of my kicks to his rib. Now he has a big bruise. He said it wasnt far becuase he couldnt grab my hands with gloves on, i told him i would be willing to fight with out them. But he told me maby another time.

One of the things that I have learned during the recent Aikido discussions is that there are, at least, two kinds of Aikido out there:

1) Aikido in which practitioners actually spar against resisting opponents.
2) Peace/love, hippy dippy, wimpy passive-aggressive Aikido.

Most Aikido, including all that I have ever seen personally and the vast majority that I have seen on video, falls into category number 2.

This distinction should be kept in mind.

Having said that, any fighting system based on remaining calm is crap. If one is attacked, it is entirely likely that one will not be calm. That was the point of my subway scenario above.

This article is clearly an advert targeting hippies.

So are these fuckers here in Colorado? I may have to go check out their school if it isn't in Pueblo or somthing like that. They may have the R34L Aki. As for the hippys they abound here somthing about mountains and they come a running. Well less running more like walking slowly playing bongos and stuff. There was a time that Boulder was the hippy capitol (next to safran) of the world, that is until property values went sky high. Now it is the trust fund hippy capitol of the world......wow I derailed.

1365 Osage Street, Denver, CO..... that is 20 min from my house i may have to enroll in a beginner session to find out what it is all about.... I dont need a new gi though.

Hwang... dude didn't know wtf he was doing... period... you don't need to 'grab' hands... him saying that just lets you know he don't know ****... gloves do make a little difference, but not too much... short answer most schools don't practice sparring so they don't know how to...

I was once a member of Aikido Nippon Kan (Milwaukee branch). There were several times where our school either went to Denver to learn from Gaku Homma Sensei, or he came to Milwaukee to teach. From what I read of that news bit posted above, I think the author (from ibn live) was off on a few things.
-First, I never remember Homma Sensei being referred to as Shihan by his direct students or those of us in the satellite schools, I don't think he had the rank.
-Second, there were a few times when fighting was addressed straight out by the instructors. What I heard a number of times my last year or so while at Milwaukee Nippon Kan was: "I takes years and years before you can use these techniques in a fight!" There is more to this, but I won't get into that now.
-Third, I think this article is a case where the author does not understand what was going on while observing the demonstration/class. I could be wrong though. I say this, because Homma Sensei was promoting the corilations between boken (and jo) movements to empty hand movements while I was practicing Aikido. He had written a book with tons of pictures showing the corilations. I assume he still does this, so I would expect it to be apart of any seminar or demonstration that the main Nippon Kan dojo participates in. My guess is the boken, jo, and tanto were apart of a kata demonstration.
-Last, I got the impression while training with the Nippan Kan satellite group, that Steven Segal was not the example of Aikido our dojo approved of. Again this is only my impression, but I think Nippon Kan would distance themselves from the image that is depicted in this news write up.
Anyway those are my thoughts.

I have a book entitled "Aikido for Life" written by a Geku Homma.

I wonder if it's the same guy?

When I was a youngster, Gaku Homma used to visit my dojo
to speak with my sensei, and train a little with us. He was a
really nice guy, and not by temperment, a fighter.

At our dojo, we attacked at full speed, and normally at least
3/4 power, often full power when with each other.

Gaku Homma would easily control any attacks directed at him,
even the "suprise" ones that my friends and I regularly threw
at our own instructors, "just because. "

That said, my sensei and he often disagreed on the amount,
and the intensity of randori as a part of regular class-training.

We even sparred the karate and judo dojo students that shared
our Hongwanji training hall. . .sadly, that's no longer part of any
of those dojo.
