Oops. Didn't know Bas had a Kyokushin background too or I would've included him. Is his website www.basrutten.net ? I couldn't access it for some reason.

The reason is that Kyokushin puts it on the full contact line. If there was a spectrum of fighting skills learned in karate, I would imagine Kyokushin is at one side and SO and SO's TKD chain is on the other. As Sihon Lowe's add in the Honolulu Advertiser used to say, "NO CONTRACTS! JUST HARD WORKOUTS." For instance, does your karate dojo put you in the corner and have a Japanese tournament fighter punch you for five minutes to the body in order to teach you how to take a blow? (blocking allowed, but mostly it teaches how to absorb and move with a blow) I came from the mainland to the Honolulu dojo as a Kyokushin green belt in the seventies and the first night fought all the black belts, brown belts, and the only green belt (probably the toughest fight-he didn't want to be shown up)in a row. Then we drank beer and ate raw fish.

I have told a few put down artist on this forum when they brag about how they could easily shoot in and beat up karate guys "Good! Good for you. So for sure you'll want to go to the Kyokushin tournament... they score for takedowns and knockdowns so you'll win, here's a list and tell me how you did. Oh, by the way, if it's traditional you'll have to break atleast three boards with hand and foot to enter. Regardless if anyone wants to enter one, here's a partial list of upcoming events. And the Chicago Shidokan tourney is coming up too.

ps. Saturday is Utah Open (33rd annual), wish us well......

No Asia. I believe Kyokushin is, in fact, super sweet. Not merely cool.

Normally, I'd say I was grappling, but I was taking down and mounting people, and JFS has kindly informed us that takedowns and being mounted are neither grappling nor anti grappling, so I'm not sure what the **** I was doing. Maybe schroedinger's sparring, where it's neither grappling nor anti-grappling until somoene observes it and collapses the waveform, and then I RNC a cat to death.----fatherdog

I'm going to try to go to that tournament this weekend, if I can. Maybe do a little article on it. Looks cool.
