Grappling or Anti Grappling

What is this number 4? I have lost track of how many threads are currently active on Bullshido with no purpose other than to try and bash or embarrass JFS.

Anyways, the categories "grappling" and "striking" are for the convenience of discussion and they relfect the way most people train. But the lines get completely blurred especially in CMA where grabbing, sweeping, throwing, punching and/or kicking are often all combined in a single technique.

There's a Hung Gar tech. where you grab one arm at the wrist, yanking it out as you slam your forearm into the "armbar spot", breaking it. It's not an arm bar as there is not enough controll. It's can be thrown either off a punch or from a loose clinch like at the arms or shoulders but not yet around the waist or chest to chest.

Grappling or striking?

The better TaijiI have seen also has too many full power punches from a position where the other person is holding onto you attempting to take you down to count. No one here (almost) can see it because you mostly live in a very narrow little world where the only way you can hit anyone is to square up boxing/muay thai style and throw one of about the maybe 5 or 6 punches you know. A brief glance through the striking forum shows pretty quickly how narrow the field is and that is why most posters can't see beyond the false dichotomy presented by the "striking / grappling" question.

There are two definitions that one could follow here:

1)
If you are hitting someone, that's striking.
If you are holding someone, that's grappling.

2)
If you are elbow distance away or farther from opponent, that's striking range.
If you are closer than elbow distance, you are in grappling range.

In the first example, a double-leg is definately grappling. It would be under both definitions.

For the second example, providing the guy on top is not actually striking or grabbing the guy on the bottom, and the guy on the bottom is just holding his arms there, then I would classify that as grappling. If the man on top was punching, it would be striking since he is farther than elbow-distance (his upper-body at least) and he is hitting the other guy.

Well I already answered this in another JFS thread.

For ME grapling involves rolling,trying to get dominant position (while remaining on the ground), going for leg/arm locks and chokes.

learning to defend against a take down or striking to get up on yout feet is ground fighting/Striking and is present in all martail arts...

Although I do Agree that in pure striking MA these defenses are not drilled enough or against competent grapplers that learn to do a proper takedown. but that's another point.
