What "situation" are you talking about? Please split this into another thread so I can properly address it.

By competent standup i mean the following:

He keeps a reasonable guard at all times.

Doesn't move stiffly. Doesn't drop his hands while kicking. Circles and doesn't just back up in a straight line when attacked.

    Has good timing.

The above are a demonstration of being competitant. They certaintly aren't characteristics of a rank begininer.

Note: being competiant does not mean being an expert. it simply means being at a bare minimumn being adequate for the situation.

Feel free to point out any obvious noob mistakes for his standup. I don't think that is something that anyone has really questioned.

(note: this was dry grammar humor, the author cannot be held responsible for misunderstandings)

I'm actually going to talk to my Professor about the weapon techniques since he teaches seminars to the local police and air marshalls.

As for that knuckle in the back of the hand thing... yeah, you got me there. I've never seen that outside the one book so maybe when I started everyone had finished expunging the bad JJJ techniques.

JFS was showing a bad response to a bad attack (characteristic of a lot of CMA antigrappling demos). Dragging one BJJ SD book into the thread does not change this and distracts from the argument at hand.

I own that book too, its a great source of drills which are fun to play around with once in a while for some variations in training.

I am in agreement with you here with regards to the book, i think the empty hand stuff is great, but I am not as confident about the weapons portion. I don't think anyone is going to seek out the gracies for their knife and gun defense, and it is certainly one of the sections of the book which opinions vary. However, I do not think anyone here is going to call out the Gracies as teaching bullshido for that particular section.

The reason I brought it up was not to distract conversation, but to say, that an even standard should be applied.

Take it up with JKDChick. Other than the mess about Triads or the Seoulpa or the Burmese Mafia WHATEVER, I'm not aware of anything specifically illegal.

And that's the last word on it.

What's confusing? I mentioned in the beginnig of this thread that I do not study Mantis Kungfu, or any kungfu. I could care less abou this stand up, which btw, has nothing to prove it.
