ROTK the novel written by Luo something is considered historically inaccurate but the historical records Sanguoshi (or was it zhi?) is supposed to be historically accurate. I forgot who wrote that one but it's not the author of ROTK and it was actually used as basis for the novel.

ROTK is a novel that has been revised a few times since it was first written. Like all novels and movies, it is based loosely on historical events and tends to focus on characters that do not have a lot of historical information. The answer is that it was unlikely that he was that tough. By tough, I mean being able to take on 2 or 3 opponent of arguably equal skill at the same time. I don't think he was even mentioned much in the official history.
That being said, fighting with weapons is very different from fighting hand to hand. Unlike unarmed combat, you can take out an opponent in one shot especially with a 10-12 foot spear or a heavy longsword. It is not uncommon in ancient battlefields for an armed large or skilled warrior to be able to take out multiple opponents.

I dont think anyone can intelligently reply on this (other than the obvious reasons) since it seems not much info was kept on him. After all, he wasn't very inspirational. Although his downfall is a perfect example of the usage of the "Beauty Trap", one of the 36 Secrets. Hell, even Zhang Fei has a small shrine at which people still allegedly worship him, and everyone has seen a Guan Yu statue. I think if his character was an accurate portrayal, he would be a very interesting person. Master of battle and physical form, but flawed everywhere else.
