Laws against MMA style events in North America?

Does anyone know if there is any sort of definitive list about areas in North America have laws that prohibit MMA style events (especially within Canada)? I never see events being held in Ontario, while just across the border in Quebec there are plenty. I seem to remember some controversy a few years ago (I think as UFC was gaining popularity) so I'm thinking maybe some sort of ban came out.

I don't know about Canada, but here in the U.S.A., we have none other than Senator John McCain (R) to thank. His near singled handed crusade against NHB fighting was the impetus for the current mishmash of state laws. Though some of those reactionary laws have been whittled away in recent years, only time will tell whether the rest will be.

    String:

I believe I remember hearing on the old "No Holds Barred" internet radio program that Canada did pass a nationwide ban on MMA events.

    TK:

I believe in PA there's a ban on Professional MMA events, but an amateur event was held in Philly.

In KY we are allowed to watch guys beat each other up, we just aren't allowed to pay them.

In other words, Amateur sanctioned events are legal, but not professional events. I assume it is because the legislature has been told by the horse parks that it will detract from horse racing.

I love when people do no research, and venture opinions.

Ontario is the only province with laws against prizefighting. Everywhere else, the provincial or municipal government (or appointed athletics board) must sanction the events.

I my area, that means I'd need permission from one of my student's grandfather (Chief on local reserve) or one of my former student's aunt's permission (town council athletics commissioner).

Well at least I'm in Ottawa, which is just over the river from Quebec. That's too bad. I hate it when knee-jerk reactions make policy.

Isn't there some sort of stipulation on the size of the gloves for a prizefight in Ontario? The gloves must be at least 10oz... I think.

In bc the event needs to be sanctioned by an appropriate athletic commission. Thankfully one was set up last year by Daivd Lee and Jason Darra up here in the Okanagan, after an event in Vernon got closed down by some asshole from TKO complaing to the cops. It was gonna be sweet, Couture and Shamrock were gonna show up!!!

Here in Florida, we have it backards. Only professional MMA and Kickboxing events are sanctioned. That is, amateur bouts are illegal.

    Fucking legislative morons.

So then if I was back in Arizona, if I could convince some of the members of the Walapai nation to allow professional fighting, and they accpet it, it would be okay?

That's awsome, too bad I have weak connections.

I hope a 75% cut (who here cares about money more anyway) will sway the voice of the tribe.
