I think people around here would change their tune about tkd if they could actually grasp (haha) the numbers of females taking tkd at any given time.

At my club alone, there were usually between 100 and 125 active college-age members, and 50% were female. Every semester, we'd get between 30 and 50 new members.

Of course, I was there to study martial arts. But I certainly didn't have to join any other social groups.

Hmm... now that Der has gotten me all paranoid, I'm not sure I should have gotten my sister into TKD...

As it is, the only difference is in the organizations that schools belong to (or don't, as the case may be). Just take a look at the 3 ITFs, each claiming to be the "one, true, and only real" ITF.

Of course, with the large number of independant schools doing their own thing, this might be too impractical or impossible.

But then, there'll always be the students who don't know what kind of TKD they're doing, just like I've met people who do Karate and when I ask them what kind, they say "I dunno." like it's a stupid question.
I've been practicing ITF TKD for about 2 years now, and it's become apparent to me that not only have the 3 ITFs split politically, but are begining to have different emphasis. Politically, my club is alligned with one ITF, but is influenced by the techniques of another. We participate in tournaments from either of the 2 ITFs that we have in our area. Last year, I competed in 2 different state championships.
(For color-belts, I came 2nd in the first one, and 1st in the second one, so I guess I came 1.5th overall).

Anyway, people have started calling them different things (ITF-NK, ITF-C, etc) even though all 3 ITFs claim they're the legitimate ITF.

Of course, I'd rather not know all this. I'd rather just spar, and get my black-belt when I deserve it.

If and when I take up a 2nd MA, I hope it's one without so much politics!

PS - What's the political situation with BJJ & MT? (There are a few clubs in my area offering these).

If I'm correct there seems to be a lot less politics in BJJ and MT. Simply because there aren't as many gigantic HQ organizations like the WTF and ITF.

Oh My god, you've got to post that pic! LOL

ATA is the American Taekwondo Association. It is a total mcdojo! it is a national franchise that uses karate as it's marketing image. (most mommys and daddys know what karate is, but don't have a clue about any other martial art). I am an manager and student at a traditional kung fu school, and we have a ata school in our town.

ata is a business-based, daycare, non-traditional, non-olympic tae kwon do association. Anyone can buy a franchise and open up their own kwoon!

They gaurentee that your child will earn a black belt, and you must commit to a 3 year contract (the maximum service contract term allowed in VA), and place about 8700 dollars in their pockets.

the local mcdojo is called Petitto's ATA Karate. Check them out:
    www.atakix.com

the owner, Sandy Pettito is on the first page. She seems to have a legitamite carrer as a World champion tae kwon do martial artist, but ata is the one who awards the "WORLD" championship title, and only to American members of the ATA empire.

Plus, beware of any school that offers birthday parties!

    -respectfully, Simo

You say that like it's a bad thing.

While I personally do not do TKD for chicks, I have done:

    Capoeria Angola
    Shaolin Kempo
    Yoga

    Are you kidding me?!

I did ballet FOR the chicks. And the awesome attributes that ballet gives you.

I can't even count how many times I went out of town and had sleepovers and pillow fights with a group of 8 or more girls only to end up too tired to go back to my hotel room, so instead all 8-9-10 of us just share a bed.

    Ballet for teh win.
