Marketing executive Chee Gaik Yap went jogging with her younger sister, Gaik Choon, on Saturday, as she did not want her to go alone. It was this sense of security and caring that unwittingly led 25-year-old Gaik Yap, who held a black belt in taekwondo, to her murder.

Gaik Yap, a university graduate, was abducted, raped and bludgeoned to death in their Taman Ria Jaya neighbourhood. The victim, who worked at a snack food factory, also sustained a slash wound in the neck. Earlier, Gaik Yap, a fitness buff, had overtaken Gaik Choon at a bend and disappeared from sight about 6pm. At that juncture, the younger sibling spotted a black Naza Ria with several men inside, speeding in the direction where her sister was jogging.

The vehicle, bearing registration number PGF 678, returned at breakneck speed and disappeared. Gaik Yeap was nowhere to be seen. When there was no sign of her sister, Gaik Choon spotted one of her jogging shoes on the road and began fearing for the worst. Nine hours later, a motorist stumbled on the victim’s semi-nude body at a road shoulder and alerted the police. Police found Gaik Yap clad only in a T-shirt and bra.

Initial police investigations revealed that Gaik Yap could have been gang-raped and killed inside the multi-purpose vehicle. The Naza Ria was found near a country club about 100 metres from where the victim was jogging early yesterday morning. Blood stains, believed to have belonged to Gaik Yap, were found on the ground near the vehicle. The victim’s mother, Kim Nai, said Gaik Yap wanted to accompany her sister jogging as she did not want her to go alone. "She was a caring and good child. How could anyone do this to her?," she asked at the Sungai Petani Hospital mortuary.

Gaik Yap, who graduated from Universiti Utara Malaysia, was the third of six siblings. She had been working at the snack food factory in Taman Ria Jaya for the past four months. Kuala Muda police chief, Assistant Superintendant Law Hong Soon said a 40-man police team was deployed to scour the vicinity of the country club and Taman Ria Jaya to track down the killers.
