The turn over I posted earlier works good for a tight turtle because you break it down on the upper body on both sides, the only trick is to get your mitts in far enough to get the other arm. I am also a fan of while at the head side, stand and snap the belt and snap a hook in hard. From there it is possible to roll the person to their side and force them to do newaza.

I interpret the turtle as a sign of either inexperience or fear, really just puts the game in the attackers hands.

The log or a flattened turtle is much harder to defeat and takes a lot of work to get in a position to reverse.

And I'll go with what Greese said it is a transitory position at best but should be avoided unless the person pulling it is better or equal to their opponent.

Never assume a turtle means inexperience. Is it a position I want? **** no. But **** happens and I will take that over mount side mount...A guy that turtles when you pass his guard is someone that knows thier **** in my mind.
And that's when I figured out that tears couldn't make somebody who was dead alive again. There's another thing to learn about tears, they can't make somebody who doesn't love you any more love you again. It's the same with prayers. I wonder how much of their lives people waste crying and praying to God. If you ask me, the devil makes more sense than God does. I can at least see why people would want him around. It's good to have somebody to blame for the bad stuff they do. Maybe God's there because people get scared of all the bad stuff they do. They figure that God and the Devil are always playing this game of tug-of-war game with them. And they never know which side they're gonna wind up on. I guess that tug-of-war idea explains how sometimes, even when people try to do something good, it still turns out bad.

Agreed...and even less applicable to reality, which makes it even more annoying to me.

There's a difference between turtling in order to avoid a worse position/work for something else, and a turtling in Judo to avoid newaza.

I like the turtle similarly to the guard for submissions from inferior position. If you have an active, aggressive turtle, you can make it a decent position to be in.

But I can't stress the gayness of turtling to avoid newaza enough, gay, gay, gay.

Call me a **** Judo guy...but if someone is turtling because "they don't like the ground" I am going to accidently try and turn them by slipping and dropping my knee on the base of the skull. Or accidentlt slamming my knee to thier face.
I don't care what you fucking do...if you don't want to play in the ranges...I want to **** your **** up.

Well...I didn't see that going over well in randori at a club I'd been attending for a short while. My wrestling takedowns and actual desire to aggressively go for the submission in newaza made me unpopular enough that one of the black belts almost busted my neck (neck cranks are legal vs assholes from other clubs, apparently), and while none of them was particularly scary if I had to fight'em one on one, 6 angry black belts vs me simultaneously is scenario I'm willing to pass up on.

I'm down with it being transitory. Hell, I even play with fighting from it when we are practicing but the guys that freeze in it (the initial reason it would need to become a turn over), it is because they are refusing to engage.

There are (a few) guys that will assume a turtle position for a second while trying to recover position, but there is no need for a turn over because they are not being overly defensive.

Freezing in the turtle = :gaygay: :jerkit2yf :new_color

I was told this today as well by a 2nd Dan.

With Judo, it seems you should always go to new clubs with biohazard gear on, or risk catching the gay.
