World Ju Jitsu Federatoin

Hey everyone.

Almost two years ago, I decided I wanted to learn a martial art. I didn't really have any clear goals other than I wanted to enjoy myself and learn to fight. One of the closest schools to me was at a local leisure centre, the style was Ju Jitsu, run by the World Ju Jitsu Federation (WJJF).

To cut a long story short, after about 9 months training, I was a yellow belt and I had finally realised what they were teaching was complete bullshit. Ineffective techinques, AWFUL training methods - no sparring except for extremely light contact fighting, very little use of equipment, no contact except for groundfighting (we were never even taught any groundfighting techinques) and we were never even taught how to punch!

A friend of mine had been studying WingTsun. Now i know a lot of people have a negative opinion of WT but his was most certainly a good club - effective stuff that i have seen him use in real fighting.

So, after some demonstrations from him and some Q&A, I decided to learn WingTsun. I wasn't able to go to his club, so I went to the nearest club to me - the brilliant Chum Sut Total Fighing Academy (www.chumsut.com) - I've been training there ever since in Wing Tzun. The Sifu, Tom Lamont, is a heavyweight Vale Tudo figher who was fought worldwide and is considered one of the best Vale Tudo fighters in the UK. He's an awesome teacher, and I am forever indebted to him - the WTz is effective in real fighting, competition and is taught very well and very realistically - Sifu Lamont is an excellent teacher.

About six months ago I took up Judo as well. Very nice style, taught very well although with a lot of emphasis on competition, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Very nice throwing techniques and the teacher really knows what she's on about.

So, I decided the other day that I was going to go back to the WJJF place - I'm going to wear my old uniform and yellow belt, and just take part in a lesson and ask to spar with some of the top belts - i'm planning to say I just got out of training for a while but then I decided I really needed to learn to defend myself.

I go to the class tomorrow night. I'm hopefully bringing a friend who i'm going to equip with a digital camera - for a little bit of proof that i'm not lying to you. I'm basically going to review the school and hopefully at least groundfight with some of the higher graded people.

It's a junior (under 16) class as i'm only 15 years old myself.

I'll post my report either tomorrow night or on friday, I just want to ask now - does anyone have any comments on the WJJF or any suggestions as to what I should do or questions i should ask of the instructor?

Sounds like an awesome idea. I'm going through a similar transition from an old art (TKD) to a new one (WT). Like you, I'm also learning some grappling techniques. When I improve in WT (I've only been in it for a couple months) I intend to go back to my old TKD schools and challenge them, see how well I do. If I can, I'll get a video or at least some pictures for you guys.

I almost certainly won't be able to put any videos up - no video camera - but if my friend can come, i'll be putting up some detailed pics - with captions. Bringing a digital camera so i'm just going to tell my friend to snap away.

god the wjjf again, the biggest load of crap goin, completly not what real jujutsu (old skool or brazilian nu skool) is, after id been train for about 3 years i went to the local wjjf school for a lil xtra trainin, did a basic class, then sparred, only light contact with standin graplin only, floored all the students, (i was only 18 at the time) then sparred the instructed who knocked the crap out of me..... well worth the experence tho...
just remember your actions do reflect on your club so be polite, in my experierence they tend to be very defensive of outsiders trainin with them...hav fun!

Yeah i'm not going to mention doing other styles at all....

How come the instructor knocked the crap out of you?

I would spar the instructors but they're much bigger and older than me and I doubt they would let me spar them... still doesn't matter how good a fighter an instructor is if he can't teach his students how to fight - he should be competeing or doing door work, not teaching.

I agree on that last point Das Moose. Just because someone can kick ass doesn't mean they can teach. And, on the other hand, sometimes the not so great ones tend to be the best teachers. Your teacher won't be fighting your fights for you, so if he can't make you a better fighter, then he is usless.

Luckily enough Tom Lamont is both a brilliant fighter and a brilliant teacher.

Har har...should be fun. Let us know the story and hope you get some pics (some schools might question camera use?) I'd go back to Kalihi and beat up my old Wado-ryu mates, but they'd just hurt me ;(
