    i got a story

my originall instructor entered a weapons forms competition years ago (im guessing this was the 80's or late 70's) with a big heavy thick bo.

Since he wasn't twriling it around like a baton etc he got a low score from every judge there except from some dude from Okinawa who gave him a perfect score.

the reason? the judge said because he was using a real bo, instead of one of the super light ones, he had a better understanding of the form.

Anyways, with todays XMA, its more about showmanship and flashyness than actually understanding the application.

That happened to me, the last time I entered a open tournament, many many many many years ago. I did a broadsword form...with a real broadsword. Some wushu dude did a wushu routine with the aluminum can style broadsword that's all shiny and flappy and makes cool noises.

Thank fully, the judges were on the old school side...

Perhaps XMA should go under the label of sports entertainment? Perhaps WWE has a trademark for that already.

It is certainly a more appropriate label.

Yeah. Last time I went to the Battle of Baltimore, in my forms division all these karate guys were doing crazy flipping **** forms in my forms division. There was even a wushu guy ??? who came in and did his butterfly kick filled form. I went up and did an old school Bassai and ended up winning. The judges looked like they were in their 40s and 50s and some were also overweight so I'm thinking these guys are from the school of hard knocks era and are too overweight to flip around like ninjas in their forms so I guess they get somewhat bitter when these young agile skinny kids are flipping around and shoving their gymnastic abilities in their faces shakin it like 2 cent hoes.
