eMedia Newswire, 13th January 2006
With only weeks to go before the first ever ‘Submission Master 2006 Grappling Clinic’ in Los Angeles, California, both the world renowned Yoshiaki Fujiwara (Karl Gotch protégé and Japanese television star) and the legendary 77 year-old “Take All Comers” carnival wrestler Dick Cardinal are interviewed candidly in volume three of The Authoritative Encyclopedia of Scientific Wrestling.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 12, 2006 -- With only weeks to go before the first ever ‘Submission Master 2006 Grappling Clinic’ (see http://www.scientificwrestling.com/Fujiwara_LA_2006.htm) in Los Angeles, California, both the world renowned Yoshiaki Fujiwara (Karl Gotch protégé and Japanese television star) and the legendary 77 year-old “Take All Comers” carnival wrestler Dick Cardinal are interviewed candidly in volume three of The Authoritative Encyclopedia of Scientific Wrestling.
Both experts in the obscure Western martial art of Catch-As-Catch-Can Wrestling (catch wrestling for short), Dick Cardinal and Yoshiaki Fujiwara share their stories as wrestlers in the latest installment of the highly acclaimed Authoritative Encyclopedia of Scientific Wrestling. Volume three also includes four exceedingly rare books chronicling the history of Western grappling:
1.Readers can peruse the seldom seen 1823 tome Wrestliana; Or, An Historical Account of Ancient and Modern Wrestling by W. Litt
2.the turn of the 20th Century classic Spalding’s How to Wrestle which includes instruction by the man appointed by President Teddy Roosevelt to head the West Point Military Academy’s self-defense program Tom Jenkins as well as George “The Russian Lion” Hackenschmidt
3.the never before published You Don’t Have to Be As Big As The Other Man; The Tom Jenkins Story by Colonel Red Reeder
4.the perennial classic Scientific Wrestling by champion wrestler George Bothner
The new encyclopedia sheds light on the nearly lost traditions of Western-style submission grappling and will be of particular interest to fans of Ultimate Fighting (UFC), Brazilian Jiu-Jitus (BJJ), and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Western Combatives expert Jake Shannon has compiled classics from his private wrestling library, along with other rare items into the Authoritative Encyclopedia of Scientific Wrestling.
“The money paid for the original antique content in all of these volumes literally amounts to a small fortune”, said Jake when asked about the project. “Now that all is said and done, what was once in the hands of only the elite, privileged few has been preserved for future generations and made available to martial arts enthusiasts around the world.”
The series is one of the best selling titles at Lulu Press and has received high praise from some of the biggest names from all facets of the wrestling community. Wade Schalles, the current Guiness Book of World Records all-time leader in wrestling wins and pins (as well as a NCAA Judo All-American and 9th Degree Black Belt and multi-time champion in the Russian martial art of Sombo) says, "The Authoritative Encyclopedia of Scientific Wrestling is an extremely pleasant walk down the sport's memory lane. Each volume is almost 500 pages of century old techniques that every modern day wrestler thinks he invented. It's a must have for anyone who has spent more than one season in America's wrestling rooms."
Retired Law Enforcement Officer and Catch As Catch Can Wrestling Legend Billy Wicks said, "Fantastic encyclopedia on wrestling, this needs to be in the Library of Congress."
Executive Director of the International Wrestling Institute and Museum, Mike Chapman said, "This is a very nice and impressive book, and, as the author of 16 books myself, I know how much work goes into such a project… The book will be placed in our library here at the museum, so that others can have access to it."
After reading the first volume, Dick Cardinal said, "A tremendous, spectacular text filled with fascinating material. ...Strangler Lewis, Earl Liederman, the notes on gouging, I'm only 1/3 of the way and I've found interesting thoughts and memorabilia on each page. Thanks for this treasure & congratulations." Later, Mr. Cardinal allowed himself to be interviewed for the third volume of the encyclopedia project. Approached by Jake Shannon to share some ideas on the nearly lost techniques of hook wrestling, Mr. Cardinal agreed give a clinic on the brutal submission grappling methods of carnival-style hook wrestling at the Submission Master 2006 Grappling Clinic to be held February 25th and 26th in Los Angeles, California.
Also featured at the event are clinics with top of the food chain Mixed Martial Art competitor Josh Barnett as well as Shootfighting’s Bart Vale. Those familiar with the sport of Mixed Martial Arts will recognize Barnett as the youngest UFC heavyweight champion in history and the current King of Pancrase and those who followed early MMA in the United States will be familiar with Bart Vale.
“It was purely a coincidence that both Fujiwara and Mr. Cardinal would both be instructing at the Submission Master event and both be interviewed in volume three of The Authoritative Encyclopedia of Scientific Wrestling,” said Mr. Shannon. “This is a once in a life-time opportunity for my generation of wrestlers to pick the brains of these giants, I feel very excited. Very excited.”
