I think it's becuase BJJ advances to the next belt very slowly. You can have skilled white belts.

Have you seen BJ Penn vs. Matt Hughes? He made one of the best wrestlers in the world look like a noob.

    I fucking hate "hawaiians"
Tough is not how you act, tough is how you train.

Actually Penn got his black belt very quickly. He had very fortunate family circumstances and was able to train full time -- and was obviously talented.

And he was sort of a black belt by the time he tapped Matt Hughes. Oh, and he's pretty bad ass even for a black belt.

maybe he's wearing a white belt because he doesn't have a belt rank in judo.

i mean it's a judo tournament, in judo he IS a white belt.

BJ Penn is not your average martial artist. He was never the average n00b, he was never the average white belt... and so and so on... and he was never the average black belt. He is like the Kimura or Muhammad Ali or Luke Skywalker of BJJ. Simply put in scientific terms, he is a fucking grappling Rambo. :sniperdan

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

I train 5 times a week. BJ Penn trained (and probably still does train) about 6 hours a day to get his black belt. His family was rich, so he did that instead of getting a job.
